SIOUX FALLS – The Minnehaha County Democratic Party firmly stands against the absolute destruction of South Dakotan livelihoods that will occur should the House pass the Senate’s version of the Big Billionaire’s Bill.
“John Thune gave tax breaks to billionaire donors like T Denny on the backs of working class South Dakotans who rely on things like SNAP and Medicaid to survive. Mark my words: this bill will shutter the doors of South Dakota’s rural hospitals. This bill will leave South Dakota kids hungry. This bill will kill South Dakotans – and you have Leader John Thune and Senator Mike Rounds to thank for that,” said Minnehaha County Democratic Party Chair Erin Royer.
“Minnehaha County is John Thune’s backyard, and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. The Minnehaha County Democrats, in concert with the South Dakota Democratic Party, are the front lines of resistance against John Thune and his bowing down to billionaire interests,” said MCDP Communications Chair Addison Miller.
The Minnehaha County Democratic Party fully, utterly, and completely denounces the passage of this bill, and promises to do everything we can to ensure that Leader Thune does not go a day without hearing about the South Dakotan lives he’s worked to destroy in guiding this bill to its passage.
The House version of the bill was bad enough – but John Thune’s Senate version of the bill somehow managed to be even worse for South Dakotans.“When you have a distant politician in Washington, they don’t know how to make the best decisions for South Dakotans,” said Nikki Gronli, former USDA State Rural Development Director.
Seemingly, John Thune is under the impression that South Dakotans want:
The loss of healthcare coverage for more than 16,000 South Dakotans – 60% of whom live in rural areas.
The shuttering of hospitals and community healthcare centers that rural South Dakota towns rely upon.
Automatic Medicare Cuts through the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) Act.
The loss of healthcare coverage for 16 million Americans by 2034, and the potential loss of healthcare coverage for 30 million Americans total.
The slashing of SNAP benefits which 8% of South Dakota households rely on. These benefits support the farmers and local community businesses that rely upon them. That’s nearly 14,000 South Dakotans – including 8,700 South Dakota kids – that could have an empty dinner table thanks to John Thune.
“Once again, Leader Thune is siding with billionaires over rural communities, over working families, over the South Dakotans who deserve access to health care, food, and economic security,” said Nikki Gronli, former USDA State Rural Development Director
“This bill is despicable, and will destroy the lives of countless families in South Dakota. People will die as a result of this bill. We’re not going to let up any time soon. You can count on Minnehaha Democrats to ensure that John Thune never forgets what he just did to South Dakota,” said Minnehaha County Democratic Party Communications Chair Addison Miller.
